BMW highlights motorcycle connectivity with new display

BMW Motorrad has launched a new connectivity feature for the company’s motorcycle range, with a 6.5-inch TFT display communicating information about road conditions to the rider. 

The company believes that fast and safe information with the least possible distraction from traffic is key for riders to reduce the impact of congestion on their journeys. In addition, they also feel that motorcycle users should be able to have the same options available to them as their car-driving counterparts, therefore the system includes smartphone connectivity to allow for calls and music streaming through helmets fitted with the BMW Motorrad communication system. 

The TFT display also provides information on speed and RPM, removing the need for any traditional dials. During development, engineers placed a major focus on designing all the rider interaction activities so as to keep rider distraction to an absolute minimum. BMW Motorrad is setting standards in this respect as it was possible to find a display ideally suited to a large number of specific applications. The interaction activities can be regulated by a multi-controller. This allows for control of a navigation system, displayed via a smartphone app, which also allows for recording of route and statistics.  

The new system highlights the importance of connectivity in automotive applications, from trucks to bikes, although questions may remain about how distracting the screen will prove in real world conditions. However, experienced riders will be able to deal with the information they are given, and with traffic situations, road condition information and easy-to-use controls, the system could improve safety amongst riders by providing more information than usual to help plan and improve their travel.  

The new Connectivity option will be launched in autumn 2017 on the R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure. Further models will follow.
