Launch Report: BMW 4-Series

30 October 2020

The new BMW 4-Series coupe is more differentiated from the 3-Series saloon than its predecessor, with a unique design that is more ′aligned’ with the 6-Series and 8-Series models. This should help reinforce its position as a separate model range and the styling is also far more dramatic than its competitors. The huge ′kidney’ grille design has been very divisive, however, and prompted lively discussions on social media when the car was officially presented.

With its excellent driving position and good balance between the front and rear, the 4-Series is fun to drive. The responsive automatic transmission, incorporating a ′Sprint’ power-boost function, provides especially strong acceleration.

Several engine options are available, the same as for the 3-series saloon, but only diesel versions and the M440i are currently available with mild-hybrid technology. There is also no full-hybrid version of the 4-Series.

This may impact sales, especially as the Mercedes C-Class coupe is more widely available with hybrid technology. Furthermore, the next-generation Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupes may offer more hybrid versions.
