Brembo’s brake-by-wire breakthrough
01 November 2021
Italian automotive supplier Brembo has unveiled a landmark electronic braking system. Labelled Sensify, the device will combine a mixture of hardware and artificial intelligence to essentially offer a veritable game-changer in how vehicle braking will operate.
Sensify combines familiar brake system hardware, such as calipers and discs, but combines it with advanced digital technology. Brembo’s innovation uses artificial intelligence to control braking digitally, on a platform underpinned by software, predictive algorithms and data management.
Central to Sensify’s unique selling point is the ability to provide optimised braking action on each wheel independently. This, combined with the absence of drag between pads and discs, means that emissions are minimised. The system will operate similar to modern accelerator pedals, on a ‘fly-by-wire’ basis with minimal hydraulics.
Pushing the boundaries
The electronic control unit (ECU) will gauge the status of each wheel, constantly monitoring all factors that affect brake performance. This real-time data collection is intended to improve the driver experience, and measure a multitude of in-car, and external factors that would impact braking.
With a release slated for 2024, the anticipated benefits of Sensify include shorter lock-up times, especially at high speeds. It is also claimed that it will provide: ‘more precise car handling, increased performance and confidence.’
‘By introducing Sensify, Brembo is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with a braking system, opening up entirely new opportunities to drivers to improve their experience on the road and customise brake response to their driving style,’ commented Daniele Schillaci, Brembo’s chief executive officer.
‘Sensify gives drivers the peace of mind they are looking for, and it is another significant step forward in providing cutting-edge, innovative, intelligent and sustainable solutions to the automotive industry.’
