Autovista Group draws a roadmap for the future of electric vehicles

08 May 2025

While global tensions and market uncertainties intensify, electric vehicle (EV) battery innovation continues to accelerate. The intersection of these trends is creating new winners, but who is leading the charge into the future? Find out in Autovista Group’s new EV webinar.

The EV market is at a pivotal juncture. On one hand, developments in battery technology could mean greater ranges, faster changing times and lower costs. However, current market conditions are creating friction for buyer migration to EVs.

International trade has become more precarious amid escalating tariff turbulence, while conflicts create even more instability. A poor economic outlook, combined with the withdrawal of incentives in many markets, makes adoption a more difficult prospect.

Impacted by these conditions, carmakers might suffer lower profit margins. In turn, this can mean less capital to invest in research and development. This can create a spiralling effect of slower technological advancement, less desirable vehicles and fewer sales.

However, EVs are expected to account for a growing proportion of global light-vehicle sales in the coming years. According to EV Volumes latest forecast, plug-in models will make up 23.6% of the market by the end of 2025.

The EV share is expected to increase to 43% of global light-vehicle sales in 2030. This growth will continue, reaching 65.3% in 2035 and 84.1% in 2040. But what does this highlight about the future of the global and European EV market, and what trends can be expected?
