The Volkswagen Amarok is named Glass’s Used Commercial Hero for August.

Each month, Glass’s Commercial Vehicle editors hold a meeting to name the current Used Van Hero in the UK market – the model they believe offers versatility, durability and outstanding value for money.

Andy Picton, Chief Commercial Vehicle Editor: ″With the latest generation of the VW Amarok now only available as a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel, earlier examples powered by the 2.0BiTDI engine have become more affordable.″

WHY?

The VW Amarok is a relatively rare beast on UK roads. Nevertheless, it demonstrates solid and assured car-like handling on tarmac with impressive levels of refinement whilst off-road, handles the bumpiest of surfaces with aplomb.

The entry level 2.0TDI 138bhp has plenty of grunt, but for those wanting more – and most do – there is the 4Motion BiTDI 180PS engine with auto transmission.

WHEN WAS IT ON SALE?

The Amarok was launched in 2010 and produced at the VW plant in General Pacheo, Argentina. European production was relocated to Hanover in Germany during 2012.

WHAT’S GOOD?

Go for the fully loaded Highline trim. It offers a decent MPG, whilst the auto gearbox and engine are well suited and provide progressive power when towing. As a commercial vehicle, the Amarok can be serviced and maintained through the comprehensive VW Van Centre network.

WHAT’S BAD?

Although not the be-all-and-end-all, the Amarok comes without low range and to some, this will mean a lesser off road performance. Check for drivebelt issues, CV joint failures, DPF problems and any outstanding recalls.

IDEAL BUY?

The current used market favours any high powered, high spec pickup, especially if mated to an automatic transmission with extras such as a canopy and load liner.
